Somehow this retraction hurts more than when he was yelling at her. Because it's a return to the lie, it's them finding more ways to turn away from each other, to keep the peace that held it all together.

"Maybe you should have said it a long time ago."

She doesn't look away, doesn't waver in this, won't let herself retreat back into something more comfortable but less true.
